Supporting Grandfamilies in Therapy

September 10, 2021 @ 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Nearly 3 million American children under the age of 18 are members of grandfamilies. Grandfamilies are created when a grandparent or other family member raises the child of a relative unable or unwilling to parent. Adversity does not have to mean destiny. When grandfamilies are supported, children in the family often thrive.

During this 2-hour continuing education webinar, Dr. Glenda Clare will teach participants about the grandfamily, why grandfamilies are created, their unique needs, and how to effectively support members (children, youth, young adults, adults, and older adults) of the grandfamily in therapy.

This introductory webinar is designed to help mental health clinicians:

Describe characteristics of grandfamilies and their incidence and prevalence in the United States.
List reasons children and youth come to live in a grandfamily.
Discuss the unique needs of grandfamilies to include African American, Latin, and Native American grandfamilies.
Describe the need for licensed behavioral health professionals to partner with peer support specialists to meet the needs of the grandfamily.
